Yay–it’s time for more bunny fun with these two finger games. In case you missed the first bunny fun, last week, I shared a movement journey: Peter Rabbit’s Adventure.
Who can resist some bunny fun
As I write this, we’re into a big snowstorm here in Fort Collins, but before it started, the weather was mild and I saw many bunnies (and geese, and herons) on my daily walks. Every time I see them, I want to pick one up and feel its soft fur–I never actually try, but those little rabbits are very cute and soft-looking.
Why fingerplays?
Fingerplays, of course, help children to develop their vocabulary and become more familiar with the sounds and rhythms of language–in a fun and imaginative way.
They also help develop fine motor skills. And watching your child do these games can help you to understand where they are developmentally. I wouldn’t, for example, be surprised if a 3-year-old didn’t cross their hands like I do the second verse. Even though they are physically capable of making this movement, they may not have reached to point developing crossing the midline where they may feel comfortable with this.
Our hands are so amazing. Whole books have been written about our hands. And I know that when I broke a little bone in my right wrist–near my thumb–that after several months in a cast, I had to relearn how to do all sorts of movements. It was fascinating–and painful for a while.
Here’s an interesting article about the development of the hand from Gateways Journal (of the Waldorf Early Childhood Association of North America)

The words–and timestamps, too!
First verse:
Here is a rabbit, And here are his ears, And here is his hole in the ground. When noises he hears, He pricks up his ears, And jumps in his hole in the ground.
The second one:
A little brown rabbit popped out of the ground, Wiggled his whiskers and looked all around. Another little rabbit who lived in the grass Popped up his head and watched them pass. Then both wee rabbits went Hippety-hop, hippety-hop, hippety-hop, 'Til they came to a wall and had to stop. Then both wee rabbits turned themselves around And scurried off to their holes in the ground.
