Finding home–the poem
I wrote “Finding home” many years ago–although it didn’t have a title back then. I wrote it after I left my job as an attorney and was looking for my new path. After many years of resisting and trying to be who I thought I should be, I was creating art and writing again. I shared this poem before, in another post about finding home, but it’s been on my mind this week.
Probably because I’m going through another major life change. Leaving my teaching job (again–but for different reasons this time) has me feeling off balance. Needing to re-center myself.
Finding home
I built myself a little box
to live away my life in,
but when I tried to step inside,
I found I didn’t fit in.
So I took a little hammer,
and I pounded on my head
to see if I could cubify
to fit my little bed.
I pounded and I pounded,
but still I didn’t fit.
I needed a place to live in,
but I knew this wasn’t it.
So I put away the hammer,
and the box melted away.
Then I built a house for all of me,
and that’s where I live today.
I’m still not sure if I’ve found the right last line. I’ve tried many over the years and I like this one the best so far.
Finding the star in the apple
I also recorded this little video this week about finding the star in the apple. Did you know that there’s a star inside every apple?
Oh, and I’ve been listening to Martha Beck’s book, Finding Your Own North Star–which I checked out of the library. So I’ve been thinking about my North Star–or my authentic self.
So somehow, all of this fits together. When I first learned about the star inside the apple, I was really excited. I still think it’s amazing and beautiful, too. But, as always, if you look, you can find deeper meaning–or symbolism, perhaps. Finding your star inside yourself–guiding yourself through life. Knowing that the star that guides us is inside ourselves even if we can’t see. Allowing ourselves to be opened (figuratively!) can help us to find our star.
I also recently read Finding Your North Star by Martha Beck–it’s a lovely and inspiring book that’s helping me find my way.
I’m still fitting it all together, but poetry always helps me–as does working with my hands.
Thanks for stopping by.
xoxo

Susan, I just posted and you were right on top of me on Kiesha’s list so you are the first comment of the night. I have been thinking of true north lately. Yesterday, our Spiritual Journey Thursday group wrote about Finding Direction that made me link my thoughts with finding my true north/balance in life. Your post sparked my feelings again. I enjoyed your spontaneous song during the video. Stay happy!

I love these “coincidences.” Your comment helped me re-center.

I can relate to your poem. There have been many times I’ve tried to make myself fit when I needed to find a new place.

Thank you for sharing your spiritual and emotional journey with us. I enjoyed your poem, and I love the symbolism of the star in the apple and finding our own star inside of us; our true north. There is definitely a poem lurking there!
